Office Chair Category Descriptions

Big and Tall Office Chair: These chairs are designed for persons larger than 250 lbs or taller than 6’6”. Big and tall chairs are designed with more emphasis on strength and durability than standard office chairs. These chairs will feature thicker steel with added support for the chair base, backrest, seat pan and armrests. Chair backs and seats will often have thicker padding to accommodate the larger user. Some big and tall chairs are rated different than others so check the weight rating on the chair before buying.

Computer Chair: A computer chair speaks for itself. It is ideal for computing and tasking. These chairs are usually highly adjustable, compact and very mobile. It is important to have proper armrests and a good amount of adjustability so that more than one person can use the chair. Seat height adjustment, multi-dimensional arms and lumbar support are a few of the options to look for. These functions make computing comfortable for longer periods.

Drafting Chair: These chairs are designed for high countertops, architectural drawings or any other task that would require a taller chair. They are very similar to computer chairs in their design, function and comfort. They are just taller. Most drafting stools have a padded seat and backrest with footing or footrest. They will also offer a few standard functions like seat height adjustment, back height adjustment and lumbar support.

Ergonomic Office Chair: An ergonomic office chair places the user in the correct sitting position to maximize productivity while reducing workplace injuries associated with working in an office chair. An ergonomic office chair is highly adjustable with functions including, seat height adjustment, seat depth adjustment, back height adjustment, adjustable lumbar support and multi-dimensional armrests. These chairs are similar to computer chairs but will offer more functionality and offer better padding or upholstery options for extended sitting experiences.

Executive Office Chair: These chairs will feature a high back chair design most often with leather upholstery. They are built and bought to convey the status of the user. Executive office chairs have oversized seats and backrests with thick cushions and large rolling armrests. Because looks and aesthetics are the primary concern, function and ergonomic design are often overlooked but some new aged executive chairs are now being designed to be ergonomic.

Folding Chair: The folding chair is one of the simplest forms of office seating. Folding chairs are great for places where looks are not important and space is a premium. Their inexpensive, foldable design make them great for break rooms, receptions, banquets and other large member events. Folding chairs are constructed of metal or plastic with some deluxe models available with padded vinyl or padded fabric upholstery.

Leather Office Chair: The leather office chair is the most popular and widely searched piece of office furniture. There are two main types of leather, split and top grain. Top grain is going to be smoother, softer and more durable. Split leather is less expensive due to its lower quality. Split leather is not recommended unless the chair will be used sparingly. Some leather is offered in various colors but the most common color is black. Although initially used by executives and people of status, leather chairs have become available in almost any design. You can now find leather upholstery on computer chairs, ergonomic chairs and reception chairs.

Mesh Office Chair: Mesh back chairs were first introduced in the early 90s and they have been a success ever since. Mesh offers a few advantages that traditional upholsteries like fabric and leather cannot. Mesh chairs are much more breathable than leather and fabric chairs. This helps to keep the person cool while working, helping to reduce sweat. Mesh also contours to different body shapes unlike leather and fabric chairs do. The elastic design of mesh expands and contracts where needed to provide proper support in numerous different sitting positions. NOTE: We do not recommend sitting on an unpadded mesh seat for more than 5 hours per day. This type of use can cause numbness and tingling in the tailbone and buttocks.

Stack Chairs: These chairs are most commonly seen at banquet events, break rooms and weddings. They are designed to be comfortable for a short time with the biggest advantages being the storage capability and price. Stack chairs are inexpensive and their stackable design makes storage space less of a problem. Stackable chairs are usually armless, and constructed with a strong metal frame and thinly padded seat. Stacking chairs are made even more mobile with a stack chair dolly.

Traditional Office Chair: The chairs most commonly seen in courthouses, law offices and many other professional buildings are traditional office chairs. Often featured in an oxblood leather or vinyl, these oversized chairs have a high back chair design with big rolling armrests. There are also a number of traditional guest chairs that are featured in the same vinyl or leather upholstery to match the high back executive chairs.
